All-MCCAA Women's Basketball Awards Announced
LANSING--The Michigan Community College Athletic Association Monday announced its postseason awards for the 2023-24 women's basketball season.
Headlining the honorees are players of the year from the Eastern Conference: Tamia Tounsel, Macomb Community College; Northern Conference: Rachel Resio, Mid Michigan College; and Western Conference: Kara Bartels, Lansing Community College.
The MCCAA Coach of the Year is Lance Maney of Mid Michigan College who guided the Lakers to their second-straight tournament title with a 60-41 victory over St. Clair County Community College. Maney also earns the Northern Conference Coach of the Year nod after Mid Michigan went 29-1 overall, and tied for first place in the conference standings, heading into the NJCAA Women's Basketball Division II Championship in Joplin, Mo., upon claiming the Region XII Great Lakes A District title.
Resio swept the major individual awards in the north as the player, freshman and defensive player of the year. She averaged 15.2 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 3.0 steals per game, and was named MCCAA Northern Player of the Week five times.
The MCCAA Eastern Coach of the Year is Jackson College's Heather Brown who piloted the Jets to a share of the east crown with a 10-2 mark as part of a 25-4 overall mark. Jackson is advancing to the national tournament after earning the Region XII Great Lakes C District trophy.
Former assistant coach Megan Hudson of Lansing Community College is the MCCAA Western Conference Coach of the Year after steering the Stars to a 25-6 overall ledger (the team's first 20-win campaign since 2013) and 10-2 in conference play for a share of that title. It's an incredible turnaround for a program that was 6-20 last season, guided by Hudson who served the previous two years as an assistant.
Tounsel averaged a double-double with 15.6 points and 11.3 rebounds on 48.8 percent field goal shooting for the Monarchs. The six-time MCCAA Eastern Player of the Week also averaged 2.1 steals to get the Defensive Player of the Year nod as well.
Bartels scored 17.8 points a game for the Stars, shooting 48.7 percent from the field. She averaged 8.0 points per game more than the next closest LCC player on a team that put together a 25-6 overall record and 10-2 conference slate. She also excelled defensively with averages of 9.2 rebounds, 1.7 steals and a MCCAA-best 3.8 blocks.
