Mott Named 2023-24 MCCAA Academic School of the Year
Mott Community College's exceptional performance inside the classroom has earned the institution the distinction of 2023-24 MCCAA Academic School of the Year. The Bears' programs were led by their women's cross country team earning a team grade point average (GPA) of 3.71.
The Bears had seven of their nine sport offerings post cumulative GPAs above a 3.0. The Mott Baseball team followed its women's cross country program with an impressive 3.41 GPA. The academic accomplishment is made more impressive when considering the Bears also placed fourth in the 2023-24 Charlie Chanter All-Sports Trophy.
Al Perry, Mott Community College Athletic Director, had this to say about the honor, "As an athletics department, we could not be prouder of our student-athletes and coaches. Our institution prioritizes our academic prowess above all else, and to achieve this award this year, especially when knowing how well our other MCCAA member institutions perform in the classroom, it's an award we will cherish. Obviously, the lion's, scratch that, the bear's share of the credit for this accomplishment goes to our student athletes for their determination and effort in the classroom and the coaching staffs for reiterating the importance; however, I would be remiss not to thank the athletic department staff for the countless hours they spend working with our students, and the institution's leadership with providing us with the resources to adequately support our students outside of the classroom."
With a total of 99.48 points, Mott Community College outpaced second place Mid Michigan College who checked in with 94.83 points after a great year academically. North Central Michigan College secured third place with 87.18 points, while Macomb Community College claimed the fourth spot and Southwestern Michigan College rounded out the top five.
The MCCAA Academic School of the Year was created in 2021 to acknowledge the importance the association places on student-athletes being exceptional inside the classroom. The award, presented annually at the MCCAA summer meeting, is determined by ranking each sport's GPA and assigning 100 points to the highest GPA, and descending point totals down the rankings. For example, if four schools compete in a sport, the best GPA gets 100 points, the second gets 75, the third gets 50, and the fourth gets 25.
The MCCAA congratulates the Mott Community College athletic department for earning this year's honor and acknowledges all association schools for a remarkable year in the classroom.
How the award is determined
The award is determined by ranking each sport's grade point average and assigning 100 points to the highest GPA and then assigning descending point totals down the rankings. For example, if there are four schools that have a certain sport (i.e. baseball), the best baseball GPA gets 100 points, second gets 75, third gets 50 and fourth gets 25.
