Grand Rapids volleyball wins fourth straight MCCAA championship with 3-1 win over Mott

The Grand Rapids Community College volleyball dropped the first set of the MCCAA championship match but won the next three to win their fourth consecutive MCCAA volleyball championship. It is the Raiders seventh championship. With the win, they improve to 27-6 overall while Mott Community College drops to 19-13 overall. 

Mott claimed a back and forth first match 27-25 to take a one set to none lead. They Raiders came storming back to win the second set in convincing fashion by a score of 25-9. Grand Rapids also won the third set by a score of 25-16. In the fourth set, the Bears had a late lead but Grand Rapids came from behind to win the match 25-23 and claim the title. 

Grand Rapids CC was lead by Danielle Johnston with 23 kills and 19 digs, while Jasmine Wellet had seven kills and 15 digs. Mikayla Vallad had 24 digs, Jamie Wellet had 22 set assists and 10 digs. 

Mott was paced by Taylor Karhoff with nine kills and eight digs, while Alexis Keahy-Haney also had nine kills and three block assists. Taylor Wendling had eight kills, while Katie Speaks had 22 digs. Deanna Mann added 15 set assists and 13 digs. 

Grand Rapids will play in the NJCAA Division II Great Lakes District B Tournament on Thursday at 6 PM against either Muskegon CC, Cuyahoga CC or Kalamazoo Valley CC at the SC4 Fieldhouse in Port Huron, MI. The Bears will face the winner of Macomb CC and St. Clair County CC at 8 PM on Thursday in the Great Lakes District A Tournament at the SC4 Fieldhouse in Port Huron, MI.
