Ham, Cavin, power Lansing CC to victory over Frederick CC in first round of NJCAA Division II World Series

The Lansing Community College baseball team pounded out 22 hits, including four each by Robert Cavin (Livonia, MI/Stevenson) and Brendan Ham (Hudsonville, MI/Hudsonville) to defeat Frederick (MD) Community College 13-2 in the first round of the NJCAA Division II World Series in Enid, OK on Friday afternoon. All nine hatters had at least one hit in the game. 

The Stars (43-9) opened the scoring in the top of the third, when Hunter Lay (Chelsea, MI/Chelsea) scored when Cavin was caught stealing second. Frederick tied the game in the bottom of the third on a RBI single. In the fifth, Chris Hege (Lake Orion, MI/Lake Orion) scored on a single to centerfield by Blake McRae (Armada, MI/Romeo). 

In the top of the sixth, Peyton Mazzola (Grandville, MI/Grandville) drove in Ham with a sacrifice fly. Lay then drove in Noah Bright (Macomb, MI/Henry Ford II) and Hege with a 2 RBI single. In the top of the seventh, Ham doubled in Cavin and Jace Preston (DeWitt, MI/DeWitt). Frederick got a run back in the bottom of the sixth on a home run to make it 7-2, Stars. 

In the top of the eight, the Stars extended the lead, When Ham singled in Cavin. Then, Shane Juday (Midland, MI/Dow) singled in Preston to make the score 9-2. In the ninth, Lansing scored four more runs. Cavin started the scoring, doubling in Mazzola. Then, Ham doubled in Preston and Cavin. Finally, Ham scored on an RBI single by Juday to make the final 13-2. 

Grant Dittmer (Bay City, MI/All Saints) picked up his tenth win going seven innings, scattering eight hits, allowing two runs, both earned, walking two and striking out ten. Ham was four for six with five RBI, two doubles and two runs scored. Cavin was four for four with three runs scored, two walks, a double and an RBI. McRae and Hege collected three hits each, while Juday and Lay each had a pair of RBI.

The fifth seeded Stars will face top seeded Pearl River (MS) Community College at 8:15 PM on Sunday in Enid, OK.
