Kirtland Community College Wins 2024-25 MCCAA Academic School of the Year
The Firebirds of Kirtland Community College have earned MCCAA Academic School of the Year for the first time in program history! The annual academic honor—now in its fifth year— was created in 2021 to acknowledge the importance the association places on student-athletes being exceptional in the classroom. The award, presented annually at the MCCAA summer meeting, is determined by ranking each sport's GPA and assigning 100 points to the highest GPA, and descending point totals down the rankings. For example, if four schools compete in a sport, the best GPA gets 100 points, the second gets 75, the third gets 50, and the fourth gets 25.
This year, six of Kirtland's seven sports posted a 3.19 or better team GPA, led by men's cross country with a 3.6 GPA. Five sports followed above a 3.0+ team GPA as women's basketball checked in next with a 3.49, men's golf netted a 3.38, men's bowling had a 3.30, women's cross country notched a 3.26 and women's bowling posted a 3.19. Of the six, three recorded the best GPA in their sport across the entire MCCAA with two others checking in second in their respective sport association-wide.
Muskegon Community College was second in this year's Academic School of the Year standings, followed by 2023-24 Academic School of the Year winner, Mott Community College, in third. Glen Oaks Community College was fourth while Jackson College rounded out the top five academic schools in this year's calculations.
The MCCAA congratulates the Kirtland Community College athletic department for earning this year's honor and acknowledges all association schools for a remarkable year in the classroom.
